Ratepayers Feedback Jul-Aug 2013 THE EDGE PAGE 9, 11 SEPTEMBER 2013
For those of you who read this on a regular basis we wish to advise that Sedgefield Ratepayers have not been in hibernation. Following the meeting with Municipal officials in June a follow up meeting was held with the new Director of Technical Services, Michael Rhode. We briefed him on the many maintenance issues that required attention and visited certain locations in order to explain our frustrations with the lack of action by other bodies.
The “wreck of the Kiani Satu” in August resulted in probably the most well coordinated multi-organisational response we have seen in this area in past 10 years. Ratepayers attended the initial briefing on Sunday 11 August and was kept informed daily of all developments by the Municipal Manager. This information in turn was circulated to all members of ratepayers electronically. The successful removal of the vessel and the clean up of the beaches and Goukamma estuary is a relief to everyone.
The issue of the re-opening of the Swartvlei estuary mouth remains to be resolved. We are in consultation with the Municipality and SANParks because of residents affected by rising water levels and overflowing septic tanks.
The consultants handling the contract for disposal of waste materials, builders’ rubble, garden refuse, etc. have issued a final report. The documents are enormous and difficult to read so we asked for an extension to allow us time to review them. It would appear that whatever the final outcome is, residents will continue to take their refuse to the existing site and it remains the responsibility of the Municipality to relocate it to a finally approved dumpsite.
We would all like to see more beautification of Sedgefield. With this objective in mind Ratepayers with the Tree Committee and the Conservancies are talking to the Municipality regarding supply and planting of trees on the Village Green and other locations and planting of aloes along the N2 inside the pole fencing.
We also hope that the appointment of an enthusiastic tourism manager will take place before the arrival of our summer visitors.
